St. George Marine Science Camp: Through generous support from many entities the St. George Traditional Council and the Institute have been hosting a marine science camp for young people from the Pribilof Islands. These young researchers have been conducting plankton surveys (finding king crab zoea); halibut and fur seal stomach content analysis, first ever measurements of the rarest kelp on earth - Aureophycus aleuticus, or Golden V-Kelp; local and traditional knowledge of king crab habitat, urchin roe analysis and surveys; developing a biodiversity species list for the Pribilof Domain; and presenting their findings at the International Marine Science PICES conference in Seattle. Research Internship: Community-based research projects are made available for college students, such as seal research, bird research, reindeer management, and vegetation studies. The opportunity to develop new projects is unlimited, i.e. inter-tidal, geology, history, etc.
Cultural and Natural History Programs: In May there is always the chance of seeing life time birds, such as a bean goose, Mongolian plover, Eurasian widgeon, dovekie, and all summer long there are nesting red-legged kittiwakes. St. George is a paradise for Naturalists and photographers. These programs take advantage of the cultural and natural history by providing participants a wide variety of activities such as hiking to High Bluffs to see spectacular sea bird colonies, visiting a seal research site, receiving instruction in traditional Aleut skills, tours of historic buildings, and the opportunity to be disconnected from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
Research Logistic Support: The community of St. George is happy to host researchers from around the world to come and conduct research that will lend to a greater understanding of the world around us. The Institute provides logistical support - such as housing, transportation, research assistants, etc., as well as a mentorship program.
